How can a specialised dementia occupational therapist help me?

Our occupational therapist will work with you and your family or carer to identify the areas you are struggling with and will help you to find ways around them.

She will provide practical advice and techniques that aim to decrease the impact of the condition enabling you to continue enjoying the things that are important to you.

Examples of ways we may be able to help include:

  • Advice on new ways to enable you to continue doing your daily activities such as washing and dressing
  • Help with sourcing useful equipment that can make your life easier
  • Recommendations on possible adaptations to your home to ensure it will continue to meet your needs in the longer term. For example, advice on hand rails, a wet room or stairlift
  • Memory techniques to help manage short term memory loss
  • Management of tiredness, as extreme fatigue is a common problem with Dementia
  • Orientation strategies
  • Reminiscence work to help address long term memory loss
  • Daily planning to help provide structure and routine to the day.

What are the benefits of massage for people affected by dementia?

There is scientific evidence that massage can help manage some of the symptoms often associated with dementia such as anxiety, agitated behaviour and depression.

  • Massage therapy can be very comforting and is deeply relaxing.
  • It can help ease aches and pains, improving physical comfort.
  • It can help to keep the body soft and supple, minimising the stiffness often associated with the condition.
  • It gives the receiver the opportunity to talk openly with a therapist about how they are feeling. This can help with emotional well-being and mental health.
